Open Faced Sloppy Joes (SWC)

Open Faced Sloppy Joes (SWC)

Today I am doing a favor for a friend who just launced his own blog dedicated to cooking and sharing good recipes. You can check out his blog at http://bothwell.typepad.com/stiffwillichili/. After browsing through his site I came across his Open Face Sloppy Joe recipe and knew right then I was going to make that recipe.

Here is the recipe where you can find all the ingredients and the steps, very easy to follow and actually has a fairly quick turn around time.

Sloppy Joe Ingredients

First you have to start out with all the ingredients, it looks like there is a lot here but most of the ingredients are staples in every kitchen.

The Diced Up Green Pepper

Diced up Green Onion

Next come the diced up green pepper and green onion. Note that the recipe calls for a white onion, I forgot to pick an onion up at the store so I had to improvise with what I had.

Once I had those in the pan I added the olive oil and got them cooking on a medium-low heat.

Light Sprinkle of Pepper

Sprinkled Some Salt

After these guys have been cooking for a minute or two I sprinkled it with some salt and pepper.

Keep those veggies stirring

After that it was a couple minutes of constant stirring and preheating the oven.

Pile 'o Meat

Pile

After about five minutes of cooking there we turn up the heat to medium high and toss in the ground beef. I moved all the veggies to the outside of the pan to let the meat cook in the center where it was the hottest. Its important to note that this was 80% lean beef, I have been told that the 90% doesnt put off enough juices to cook it properly in this recipe and it just tastes better :D

I know they weren

Once the meat was in the pan and starting to brown out came the spices, first we sprinkled a dash of cayenne pepper, some ground mustard, garlic powder, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Then mixed those in real well with the meat.

Tomato Paste

After the meat is sufficiently cooked it was time to add the tomato sauce, brown sugar, wortchester saunce, salt and pepper. Now we are starting to see everything come together aye? Also note I used dark brown sugar instead of light, its all I had available at the time. I have never really used light as well so I dont know what kind of difference there is there.

Sloppy Joe Simmering

The bread I mangled

Now we just let our amazing concoction simmer while we prep the bread. I feel really dumb at this point because I realized I dont have a serated bread knife and I mangled a lot of bread. So make sure you are more prepped then I was to cut the french bread.

Now that our oven has been pre-heated we drop our bread into the oven @400 degrees for ten minutes to get them golden brown.

Sloppy Joes with Cheese

Once we have our bread cooked we load them up with a nice serving of sloppy joe and sprinkle a generous amount of chedder cheese on the top. Once the bread was finished I switch the oven to Broil so we could melt the cheese. I think my oven was still a little hot from the cooking and my cheese melted much quicker then expected, so keep an eye on it.

Now a minute later after putting the sandwiches back into the oven to melt the cheese we have our final product.

Now we have them all arranged and looking nice on a plate … looking nice to eat :D

After cooking and eating this I have a few suggestions for anyone who is looking to make these. First, dont sample this before its done … because you wont stop “sampling” it and there wont be any left. Second, make sure you cut the bread between 1/3 and 1/2 of an inch thick.  As I said earlier make sure you use 80% lean beef and try and get as many fresh ingredients as possible.

This is the best sloppy joe I have ever had hands down. I think these are great looking sloppy joes that will give you high hopes for their taste and boy oh boy do they deliver. I gotta give Trevor I high five for this awesome recipe, he has definetly hit the ground running in my book.
